SAHI
(Society to Aid the Hearing Impaired)
ABOUT US
SAHI stands for Society to Aid the Hearing Impaired. It is an Indian NGO that strives to help poor children with hearing impairment. Every year in AP approximately 2,500 children are born totally deaf. If not treated in the first 3-5 years of life they will remain hearing and speech challenged all their lives
.
SAHI seeks to identify children mainly in rural areas with little or no access to modern medical treatment. Since it was established, SAHI has been trying to address this problem by conducting camps in remote areas of the state. It is a well known fact that as children grow and develop they learn about sound with little effort. But it can be a daunting task for a child with hearing impairment to understand sounds and develop language & communication skills, which in turn affects his personal development and process of reasoning and education.
SAHI, a Non government organization consisting of concerned citizens, ENT surgeons, audiologists and hospital management personnel has embarked on a project to help these unfortunate children.
SAHI conducts free surgeries to the underprivileged persons. Persons are selected either from camps or from patients approaching the doctors. It distributes hearing aids after thorough evaluation by ENT doctors and Audiologists as a team.
SAHI launched the ‘Gift a Ear’ Project on 27th May 2006, in which assistance for Cochlear Implant operation is given to patients with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss after evaluation.
‘Cochlear Implant Club’ launched on 13.11.2005 by hon’ble speaker Sri. KR. Suresh Reddy during 1st Annual celebrations of SAHI. SAHI started this club to address the problems of people with severe to profound loss who need Cochlear Implant surgery.
On the occasion of the 2nd anniversary celebrations, SAHI has launched an ambitious program called the ‘Deaf Free Mandal’ Project. Nawabpet mandal in the backward district of Mahabubnagar was adopted as the beneficiary on 4th Nov 2006.
‘Grow a tree .. for free …’ project launched as part of 2nd anniversary celebrations under which free saplings are given to all hearing aid recipients as a token of SAHI’s commitment towards creating and maintaining a wholesome and harmonious ecological environment.
SAHI felicitated the Cochlear Implant team of Apollo Hospital on completion of 50 cases of Cochlear Implant surgery on 18th Feb 2007 at Apollo Hospital Lawns.
SAHI played its role in requesting the Hon’ble Chief Minister to include Cochlear Implant surgery for Children less than 6 years of age in the Rajiv Aarogyasri Community Health Insurance Scheme through which all poor families can avail the benefit of surgery which was hitherto restricted only to very rich because of its prohibitive price.
